The idea that the Libertarian Party would be better off if Ron Paul had “never been born” ignores reality, history, and the lived experience of thousands of Libertarians like me. Ron Paul introduced an entire generation to libertarian ideas. Anti war foreign policy. Sound money. Civil liberties. The Federal Reserve. The Patriot Act. Austrian economics. Non interventionism. He brought those ideas to millions of people on a national debate stage inside the Republican Party where Libertarian ideas had never received that kind of exposure before. And that exposure directly benefited the Libertarian Party. After Ron Paul’s massive Republican primary runs in 2008 and 2012 energized young voters and liberty minded Republicans, the Libertarian Party had its second best presidential vote total in history in 2012 with Gary Johnson winning over 1.2 million votes, more than doubling the LP’s 2008 performance of roughly 523,000 votes. That didn’t happen in a vacuum. A huge number of Ron Paul supporters suddenly had no Republican liberty candidate left to vote for in the general election, and many migrated toward the Libertarian Party. Ron Paul built the pipeline that introduced people to libertarian ideas at a scale the LP had never achieved on its own. A huge percentage of today’s LP members, activists, donors, candidates, podcasters, county affiliates, and state party leaders came out of the Ron Paul movement. I’m one of them. I was a 20 year old preparing to deploy to Iraq during his 08 campaign. Ron Paul’s message on war, civil liberties, sound money, and limited government absolutely helped shape my political evolution into becoming a Libertarian. It eventually led me to running for Jacksonville City Council in a partisan race as a registered Libertarian where I broke records for a Libertarian candidate in Jacksonville by earning 34.5% of the vote, receiving over 55,000 votes, and raising over $20,000 for the campaign. It also eventually led me to serving as an officer in my county Libertarian Party affiliate. The “Ron Paul Revolution” wasn’t fake. It created lifelong Libertarians. You can argue Ron Paul wasn’t formally in the LP. Fine. But pretending the Libertarian Party would somehow be stronger today if the most influential libertarian figure of the last 50 years never existed is historically unserious. Without Ron Paul, there are probably far fewer Libertarians in the Libertarian Party today, not more.
